I have been enjoying being a stay at home mom SO MUCH! It took me a while to get use to the not so busy/homework every second of the day schedule. Now I am starting to miss having something to study and learn and keep up on. I have been trying to learn how to cook, bake and budget and that has blessed our family a lot. I feel like I am loosing the skills I learned in school about learning though so Jason and I are starting a new thing. We are both picking a topic that we want to have an opinion on. We are then going to research as much as we can and teach each other what we are learning in the process.

Jason's topic is global warming. It has been so neat to learn more and talk to people and find out different resources to look into and why they have the opinions they do.

I have decided that what I want to research is the pros and cons of homeschooling vs. public schooling and the different techniques of homeschooling. I have been so surprised at how many families here homeschool their children. I have always been blessed to live in areas where the schools are great and so I always thought homeschooling was depriving your child of social interactions... but I am learning a different perspective. I would love to hear any thoughts you have!

Jill,
Here's a booklist I have referenced about homeschooling stuff, if you wanna check into any of the books. A friend of mine in Salt Lake (a librarian) compiled the list for the public library. I'll be interested to hear what you learn/think about it.

They also had a booklist for global warming, but I'm not as informed on that topic.

Make sure to post about this as you learn! :) I'll be super interested to hear.

My husband was homeschooled! When there are a lot of other homeschooled kids around, it's like a little community where they can interact. I'm possibly considering it. I don't know yet, but I still have 5 years. :)
I used to be against home schooling, but now I'm for it. I think both are great and what I've decided is that it really does depend on several things: the school, the teacher that year, your child (one may need to be at home and another may need to be in school), the world's standards (since this rubs so hard on our children), etc. This list could really go on forever, but I think it all boils down to Heavenly Father really does know best. He cares more than anyone about the little spirits He's entrusted in your care and knows how they work and what they need based on all of the above listed circumstances. He will tell you if you bring your concern to Him and willingly listen.
There are so many different ways to home school that your child can be as involved with others or as secluded as you arrange for them to be. There are so many programs and also different curricula to select. My sister home schools and she does it in such a neat, beautiful way (I know that sounds very cheesy).
I really loved my public school experiences and memories, but now that the world is changing, I'm starting to change my high public school views. In the area that we live in, I would trust sending Hannah to some of the elementary grades, but then I'd probably pull her out and do a lot of home schooling (depending).
But why am I saying all of these things?! You know this, I'm preaching to the choir! These are very interesting and controversial topics though! My siblings and parents all share their very strong yet differing opinions on this exact issue. And I think it's so funny because I think it's totally unique to the individual family and children when they take it to the Lord. How can someone say one way or the other that all must be home schooled or that all must be public? But yet my family is so funny that way.
